Health officials say they will begin the roll out of a new meningitis vaccine for sub-Saharan Africa on 6 December.
The vaccine, which has been developed in India, costs less the fifty US cents a dose and clinical tests suggest it could offer protection for between 10 and 15 years.Seasonal epidemics of meningitis kill thousands in Africa every year.
Cholera Epidemic in Haiti Thought to Be Imported
A leading French epidemiologist has said that the strain of cholera that triggered an epidemic that has claimed more than 1,600 lives in Haiti must have been brought in from abroad.
Many in Haiti believe the deadly outbreak was caused by poor sanitation at a camp for United Nations peacekeeping troops from Nepal, a country where the disease is endemic. The UN force has said there is no proof of this.
